Few Idaho towns are as closely tied to their mines as Kellogg, and this 1957 view of Kellogg High School places a school building in that mining setting. Kellogg grew up in the Silver Valley of the Coeur d'Alene district, where silver, lead and zinc mining shaped the local economy, so the school served families whose fortunes rose and fell with the mines. The photograph belongs to a group of Library of Congress views of schools from the 1950s, a period when postwar growth pushed many communities to expand and modernize their classrooms.
