Five young men pose with their bicycles in this picture of Roy Wilkins and four boyhood friends, taken while he attended Mechanical Arts High School in St. Louis, before 1920. Wilkins, born in 1901, went on to lead the NAACP as its executive secretary from 1955 to 1977. The caption card records no exact date, so the outing can be placed only as early in his school years. Bicycle outings were a common pastime for boys of that era, and the photograph offers a glimpse of Wilkins well before his public career began.
