The lithograph shows Abraham Lincoln's body lying in state in the City Hall rotunda in New York, where the public filed past on April 24 and 25, 1865. The city was one stop on the slow funeral route that carried the slain president from Washington toward Springfield, Illinois. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for affordable prints of current events, issued the view for a public eager to take part in the national mourning. It is a useful record of how deeply the city grieved a president killed less than a week after Lee's surrender at Appomattox.
