The Mammoth Grove Hotel stood among the giant sequoias of the Calaveras Big Trees grove in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California, a place that drew tourists from the 1850s onward after the trees became widely known. The hotel gave travelers a base for seeing trees far larger than most visitors had ever imagined. This print is the left or right half of a stereograph, the paired-image format that viewers examined through a stereoscope to create a three-dimensional effect. Its caption card identifies it as no. 874 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, and the record's publication date of 1866 is unverified, so it is best read as a period estimate.
