The eastern edge of Carson City appears alongside the Warm Springs Hotel, a resort named for nearby hot springs, which sets this view apart from other town scenes. Carson City became the capital of the Nevada Territory in 1861 and remained the seat of government after Nevada achieved statehood in 1864, so the town was taking shape as a center of power. Stereographs like this one, issued in numbered series such as Gems of California Scenery, were popular in parlors and let viewers far away see western places through a stereoscope. The caption details come from an old card and are unverified, so treat them as provisional.
