Still water mirrors the eastern summit in this view of Donner Lake, taken from the grounds of Pollard's Hotel. The lake sits in the Sierra Nevada near Donner Pass, a name tied to the Donner Party, whose emigrants were trapped by snow in the region during the winter of 1846 to 1847. By the 1860s, the Truckee route over the mountains carried steady traffic of travelers and freight, and scenes like this one were sold to visitors as souvenir stereographs. The Library holds only one half of the stereographic pair, issued in a series called Gems of California Scenery.
