The Summit House, a stopping place on the high road over the Sierra Nevada, is the subject of this stereograph, which pairs the Dutch Flat and Donner Lake wagon roads in one view. Those routes carried freight and travelers between the Sacramento Valley mining towns and the mountain passes until the Central Pacific Railroad crossed the same summit in the late 1860s. The Library holds only one half of the original stereoscopic pair, which was issued as number 836 in the Gems of California Scenery series and was meant to be seen in three dimensions through a hand viewer. Its 1866 date places it just as the Donner Pass corridor was becoming central to westward travel.
