Black Butte, seen from the Crystal Lake House in Placer County, is a Sierra Nevada view in the form of a half stereograph, one of two images meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope to create a sense of depth. Its caption card identifies it as number 821 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, and the record notes that the Library holds only this half of the pair. Published in 1866, it belongs to a period when stereoviews of California's mountains and lakes were popular in parlors across the country, bringing distant landscapes to viewers who would never make the trip. The albumen print process of the time produced warm, finely detailed tones, and the record's details about the caption card should be read as unverified.
