Slippery Ford was a river crossing in El Dorado County, California, where wagons and stagecoaches had to negotiate a slick riverbed on the roads that carried miners and freight into the Sierra foothills. This albumen print is one half of a stereograph pair, issued in the 1860s as part of the Gems of California Scenery series and numbered 627 on the caption card. The Library holds only this half, so the three-dimensional effect of the original pair is not available here. The subject heading points to wagon trains and stage coaches, the traffic that made such a crossing a busy stopping point. The publication date and series details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
