Taken in 1857 on the 75th birthday of Capt. James Rembert, this tintype shows the rear of the house at Stirrup Branch Plantation in Bishopville, South Carolina, with enslaved people arranged in a deliberate order by rank. The staging reflects how the owner and photographer chose to present the household, and it is the arrangement that makes the picture worth studying today. Images like this were made to record a plantation's people and status as part of the owner's record of his holdings. The picture later appeared in the International Center of Photography's exhibition *Only Skin Deep*, which examined photography and race.
