The title names a particular household, the Gaines' house, where a family of enslaved people was photographed around 1861 or 1862, in the first year or two of the Civil War. The print is a salted paper photograph, an early process that gives soft, warm-brown tones and a matte surface. It survives in a Civil War album kept by the sculptor Larkin G. Mead. The record says little about the people pictured, so the image is best read closely for the sitters' posture, dress and placement as a document of domestic life under slavery.
