What sets this picture apart is its subject, La Miniatura, a house in Pasadena, California, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Alice Millard, a bookseller. Completed in 1923, the house is built of precast concrete blocks with patterned surfaces, a method Wright called "textile block," which gave a small house the texture and presence of a much larger one. The name, roughly "the miniature," suits a compact home that Wright composed as a carefully ordered arrangement of masonry, light, and window openings. Worth noticing is how the repeated block pattern and low, sheltering roofline tie the building to its hillside site.
