The etching shows an old ferry house, which the caption card dates to about 1700, though that date and the building's identity come from unverified notes. Samuel Hollyer, a New York engraver, made the print around 1906, when many artists were recording older waterfront buildings that were disappearing as the city expanded. Ferry houses like this one served as waiting rooms and landings for passengers crossing to and from nearby shores, a trade that shaped the early life of the New York waterfront. Because the record is thin, the scene is best read as a period impression of the colonial waterfront rather than a precise architectural record.
