The stereo card shows the White House's exterior with a glass conservatory attached to the grounds, a detail that sets it apart from the many views of the building's main façade. The card carries the imprint of Bell & Brother, a Washington, D.C., photography firm that issued numerous views of the capital in the later 1860s. Its title, "The President's House," was the common name for the executive mansion before "White House" became standard usage. Stereographs like this were meant for a parlor stereoscope, where the two slightly different images merged into a single view with depth. Because the caption data is recorded as unverified, the exact date of the photograph is uncertain.
