The Old Custom House stands on Custom House Plaza at the waterfront in Monterey, and it is one of the oldest surviving public buildings in California, dating to the Mexican period in the 1820s. On July 7, 1846, Commodore John Drake Sloat raised the American flag over the town, and the building's history is tied to the shift of California from Mexican to United States rule. This c1902 view was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American towns and landmarks for a wide market. The print is a cyanotype, a blue-toned process that was common for photographs of this kind.
