Charles Wolfran Cornwall was a British politician who served as Speaker of the House of Commons from 1780 until his death in 1789, and this engraved portrait appeared in the November 1780 issue of The London Magazine, printed between pages 491 and 492. Its place in a monthly periodical reflects the eighteenth-century habit of pairing current political figures with a brief biographical sketch for readers following Parliament. The print also sits within the Library of Congress's checklist of graphics relating to the American Revolution, a subject tied to Cornwall because the Commons under his time was debating the war with the American colonies.
