A house with an L-shaped piazza shares this sheet with sketches of a Gothic church and of interior furnishings, so the page reads like a working architect's notebook covering several kinds of building at once. The graphite drawing belongs to the Charles Bulfinch Archive at the Library of Congress. Bulfinch (1763–1844) is best known for classical Federal buildings, so a Gothic church sketch among his papers hints at the growing interest in medieval forms in the early 1800s. A piazza, a covered porch along one or more sides of a house, was a practical feature in warm climates and a fashionable one elsewhere.
