This view shows the full exterior of the Vuoksenniska Church in Imatra, in southeastern Finland, where the building stands near the Vuoksi River. Alvar Aalto designed the church, and the photograph dates from the late 1950s, shortly after it was completed. Aalto's use of warm brick and irregular, sculptural massing set the building apart from the more conventional churches of the period. The picture is a useful record of how the design looked when new, before decades of weathering and changes to its surroundings.
