This stereograph shows the New Capitol Building in Sacramento and is number 1208 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series. California's government settled in Sacramento in 1854 after years of moving its seat, and the new building was meant to give the young state a lasting home for its legislature. Stereographs like this were sold as pairs and viewed through a stereoscope, which gave architecture a sense of depth a flat print could not. The Library holds only one half of the original pair, so this image shows just one of the two viewpoints.
