The building in this view is the Negro Building at the Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition, which opened in Nashville in 1897 to mark the state's 100th year of statehood. Exhibitions of this era often set aside separate buildings for African American exhibitors, and the Nashville exposition's displays of African American arts and crafts drew attention to Black work and achievement at a time of deep segregation. The image is a stereograph, a paired photograph viewed through a stereoscope to create a sense of depth, which was a popular way for Americans in the 1890s to tour distant fairs and landmarks at home.
