The Extempo Club was a student society at Fisk University, the historically Black college founded in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1866, and this portrait captures its members as a group of young men and women gathered for a formal sitting. Fisk drew students from across the South during the decades after emancipation, many of them first-generation learners, and campus clubs like this one offered space for debate, performance and friendship alongside the classroom. The photograph is one of many images of Fisk students from the 1890s and early 1900s held by the Library of Congress, and it documents the institution's role in shaping a Black middle class in the Reconstruction era's aftermath.
