The image shows a match game between students of Stanford University and the University of California, a contest between two rival West Coast colleges. Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper published it in its May 7, 1896 issue, reproducing a drawing by E.J. Meeker as a halftone, a process that turned artwork into the dotted screen that newspapers and magazines relied on at the time. Basketball was only about five years old in 1896, invented by James Naismith in 1891, and women's college teams were still new, so a published scene of two women's squads on the court shows how quickly the game had spread.
