Frederic Goudy, the American type designer, is shown at work on drawings for his University of California Old Style typeface, a design he created around 1939 and 1940 for the University Press at Berkeley. Goudy spent much of his career sketching letterforms by hand before they were cut into metal type, and this photograph captures that slow, deliberate stage of the process. Goudy, who ran the Village Press and designed dozens of typefaces, was among the most prolific American type designers of the twentieth century. The picture is a useful record of how a typeface took shape at the drawing board.
