This print reproduces a drawing by Cass Gilbert, the St. Paul architect known for the Minnesota State Capitol, and shows the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis as he imagined it. Around the turn of the twentieth century, the university was expanding beyond its early buildings, and its regents looked to Gilbert for a unified plan. His design favored formal, symmetrical arrangements of stone buildings in the Beaux-Arts tradition, a style that many American campuses adopted at the time. The record's date of about 1910 comes from an unverified caption card, so the drawing's exact year is worth confirming before citing it.
