This print reproduces a drawing by architect Cass Gilbert, who is best known in Minnesota for the state capitol in St. Paul. The Minneapolis campus of the University of Minnesota was expanding rapidly in the first decade of the 1900s, and Gilbert was among the designers asked to bring order to its layout. Drawings like this one show how planners pictured the grounds: buildings arranged around open lawns and a formal central axis, in the Beaux-Arts style then popular for American universities. The catalog record for this item is not fully verified, so the exact date and the drawing's specific purpose are best checked against other sources.
