Set in Harvard Yard, this bronze statue of John Harvard stands out for its polished left foot, worn bright by generations of students who rub it for luck. Harvard, a clergyman who died in 1638, left his estate and library to the college that would later bear his name. Daniel Chester French, who later carved the seated Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial, made the figure, which was unveiled in 1884. This heliogravure, copyrighted by Cambridge photographer Charles H. Thurston and dated around 1891, shows the statue in the years when the college grounds were becoming a familiar symbol of American learning.
