This bird's-eye view shows the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee, as it appeared around 1910, seen from a high vantage point that lays out the whole campus at once. The university was founded in 1857 by Episcopal bishops of the Southern states, and its Gothic Revival buildings sit on the wooded Cumberland Plateau. Commercial publishers such as W.Y. Littig & Co. sold views like this to alumni, parents and supporters, so the print also served as a promotional portrait of the school. Its wide view of the grounds shows how much the surrounding forest and open lawns shaped the campus's appeal.
