A little red schoolhouse in Crossville, Tennessee, serves as the setting, with a teacher and her pupils gathered in a single room. Lewis Hine made the photograph sometime between 1933 and 1936, when New Deal programs sent photographers across the South to record rural life. One-room schools like this one taught several grades at once and were often the center of community life in farming areas, so the scene shows both a teaching arrangement and the modest resources that shaped rural education. The image is held in the Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information collection.
