A small model of the Statue of Freedom, the figure that crowns the Capitol dome, is the subject here, and the date of December 2, 1863 matches the day the full-size bronze was hoisted into place. The sculptor, Thomas Crawford, designed the figure but died in 1857 before it was finished, so the work passed to others to complete. The Capitol's extension and dome were then under construction in the Civil War years, and the statue was cast in bronze in Washington. The print comes from an album kept by Benjamin Brown French, who oversaw public buildings in the capital during that period.
