A small salted paper print shows the cast-iron framework of the Capitol dome rising over Washington, D.C., during construction between 1860 and 1863. The dome replaced the lighter, lower dome of the original building, and its iron ribs and segments were built while the Civil War was underway. Benjamin Brown French, who served as Commissioner of Public Buildings and oversaw the Capitol's expansion, kept this picture in his album, making it a record of the work he supervised. The Statue of Freedom was hoisted to the top of the dome in December 1863.
