This photograph shows Calvin and Grace Coolidge leaving the Capitol in Washington after the ceremonies honoring President Warren G. Harding, who died in office in San Francisco on August 2, 1923. Coolidge had been vice president and became president that same night, so the image captures the new president at the first public moment of his transition to office. The picture comes from the National Photo Company collection, a commercial studio whose photographers recorded many official Washington events of the 1920s. Its caption places it in the album of Harding material assembled by the company.
