Named for James A. Garfield, who was shot in July 1881 and died that September, this institution gives the print its particular interest. The view was issued around 1882 by Hoen & Co., a Baltimore lithography firm known for detailed printed views of American buildings. Memorial schools and halls appeared in many towns in those years as communities sought lasting ways to honor the slain president. The date comes from an unverified shelf card, so the exact year is worth treating with some caution.
