Among the many images of Fisk University in Nashville, this view is distinguished by its focus on Theological Hall, the building that housed the school's training for ministers. The photograph was reportedly shown in the American Negro exhibit at the Paris Exposition of 1900, where W. E. B. Du Bois and his collaborators presented a broad survey of Black life and achievement in the United States. Fisk, founded in 1866 to educate formerly enslaved people and their children, used such displays to show the institution's academic and religious work. The building's architecture is worth noticing as evidence of the school's aims at the turn of the century.
