Few views of the Virginia Military Institute campus show its interior as bare as this one, a basement of Old Jackson Memorial Hall, known on the record as Old J.M. Hall. The building was completed in the 1850s and served as VMI's chapel, lecture space and museum, and it was named for Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, who taught at the Institute before the Civil War. Union forces under Gen. David Hunter burned it in June 1864 during their occupation of Lexington. The caption card gives no date, so the photograph may have been taken during or after the rebuilding, but its subject is the shell of a building that was a symbol of the school's identity.
