William S. Hart, the stern Western star, plays the outlaw Lee Harding in this still from *The Narrow Trail*, as a dance hall woman clings to him while he tries to pull away. The film came out in the late 1910s, when Hart was one of the biggest names in silent Westerns, and he was known for pushing a rougher, less romanticized frontier than many of his rivals showed. Studios sent stills like this one to theaters and newspapers to promote a picture, and this copy was later gathered by the collector Gatewood W. Dunstan.
