This view shows Reid Hall on the campus of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, photographed in summer when the trees are in full leaf. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year is unknown, but the picture still shows how the campus looked to a visitor on a warm day. Washington and Lee traces its origins to 1749, and it was led by Robert E. Lee from 1865 until his death in 1870, a period that shaped its later identity. Lexington's brick and stone campus buildings give the photograph much of its visual interest.
