Few buildings on the Centennial grounds were as striking as Horticultural Hall, the large glass-and-iron conservatory raised in Fairmount Park for the 1876 Philadelphia exhibition. This wood engraving shows workers on the site, published in *Harper's Weekly* on February 19, 1876, months before the fair opened that May. Its interest lies in the glimpse of construction, with iron framework and scaffolding standing where a glass hall of exotic plants would soon rise. Such views helped readers across the country follow preparations for the nation's centennial.
