Independence Hall in Philadelphia, shown here from the outside, is the building where the Second Continental Congress met and where the Declaration of Independence was debated and adopted in 1776. This 1931 photograph records the exterior as it looked in the early twentieth century, when the hall was already treated as a national shrine. Its red brick walls, white trim and tall steeple are the features that have made the building one of the most recognizable landmarks of the American Revolution. The caption card traces the subject to Independence Hall and the year 1776, so the view can be read as a link between the building's founding history and how it was pictured nearly 150 years later.
