Steam and hot water rising beside a hotel at Geyser Springs in Sonoma County, California, make this card stand apart from the many views of the region's resorts. The stereograph, numbered 20 and dated about 1880, shows the hot springs with carriages and coaches, the horse-drawn transport that brought visitors into the countryside. Resort travel in the late 1800s drew people to mineral springs for their supposed healing waters, and the stereo format let viewers see the scene in depth through a hand viewer at home.
