The Sherry-Netherland and the Savoy-Plaza were both luxury hotels on Fifth Avenue in New York, and this c1927 photograph pairs them in a single view of the city's hotel row. The Sherry-Netherland, completed in 1927 at Fifth Avenue and 59th Street, was among the most fashionable addresses of its day, with the Savoy-Plaza rising alongside it at the edge of Grand Army Plaza. Both buildings reflect the boom in towering hotels that transformed Midtown Manhattan during the 1920s, when developers built grand residences for wealthy travelers and long-term guests. The picture is worth studying for how it records the skyline and street life of that moment, just before the Great Depression slowed construction across the city.
