A ruined street in the Christian Quarter of Canea (today Chania), on Crete, is the subject of this stereograph, which the caption ties to the massacres that shook the city in 1897. That year Crete was in open revolt against Ottoman rule, and fighting between Christian and Muslim communities led to killings and the destruction of homes and shops, prompting European powers to intervene and bringing Crete closer to the Greco-Turkish War that summer. The card was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a firm that sold stereoscopic views to a wide public, so the image was meant to let viewers at home feel they were standing among the wreckage. The caption information is old and unverified, so the exact date and cause of this particular damage should be read with caution.
