Massachusetts Street was the main thoroughfare of Lawrence, Kansas, a town founded in 1854 by free-state settlers backed by the New England Emigrant Aid Company. This stereograph, issued in 1867 by Gardner's Photographic Art Gallery in Washington, shows the street as a traveler on the new railway would have seen it. It is numbered 34 1/2 in the series *Across the continent on the Union Pacific Railway, Eastern Division*, a set of views meant to show the country opening up along the line. Stereo cards like this were viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene depth and made distant towns feel close to home viewers.
