Kilburn Brothers numbered this stereograph 5288, and its caption tracings point to a domestic scene of mothers, children, and baby carriages around 1889. Stereo cards like this were sold by the thousands in the late 1800s, and viewed through a stereoscope they gave parlor audiences a sense of depth that flat pictures lacked. The firm is generally linked to Littleton, New Hampshire, so the New York location on the card may be an error, and the record itself flags its data as unverified. The title, *The home circle*, suits the sentimental family subjects that sold well to middle-class households.
