Phoebe Apperson Hearst, the philanthropist and mother of newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst, owned this country estate in Pleasanton, California, and this view of its dining room shows a table laid for four with the formality expected in a well-run household of the period. The picture belongs to the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, whose photographers recorded the interiors and grounds of American homes for architectural and decorative study. Dating to the 1920s, the image is valuable for its record of table settings, furnishings and domestic style among wealthy families of the early twentieth century.
