Gathered around a dining table, a Puerto Rican family is the subject of this stereograph, a pair of nearly identical photographs meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. The Keystone View Company, a Meadville, Pennsylvania firm, issued it around 1905, when stereo cards were a popular parlor entertainment in American homes. The United States had taken control of Puerto Rico in 1898, and the island became a frequent subject of such cards, so the image reflects how mainland publishers presented island life to their audiences. The caption data is old and unverified, so the family's identity and the occasion are unknown, but the scene offers a glimpse of domestic life as it was recorded in the early twentieth century.
