Shown among his family rather than in uniform or at a podium, John Alexander Logan appears here as a private man. Logan rose from Illinois lawyer to Union general and later served as a United States senator, and he is remembered for issuing General Order No. 11 in 1868, which set aside May 30 for decorating soldiers' graves and became the basis of Memorial Day. The print was made from a negative by Mathew Brady, whose Washington studio photographed much of the Civil War-era political and military elite. The caption card gives no date, so the exact timing of the sitting is unknown.
