The caption names two marchers, Miss Brannan and Mrs. John Rogers, Jr., who stepped into a suffrage parade on May 4, 1912. The photograph comes from George Grantham Bain's news-photography collection, which documents much of New York's street life in the early twentieth century. By 1912, the women's suffrage movement was staging large public marches to press for the vote, a campaign that would not succeed nationally until the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified in 1920. Images like this one show how marchers presented themselves in public, at a time when such displays were still considered bold.
