This photograph shows a trade union parade held in New York in the spring of 1911 to honor the victims of the Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire. The fire on March 25, 1911, killed 146 workers, most of them young immigrant women who had been trapped on the upper floors of a Manhattan factory building. The procession reflected how strongly the disaster pushed labor and reform groups to demand safer workplaces and better conditions for garment workers. The Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency, made the picture, so it reflects the press coverage of the day.
