Few marches in Washington drew as much attention as the women's suffrage procession of March 1913, which made its way down Pennsylvania Avenue on March 3, the day before Woodrow Wilson's inauguration. Organized by Alice Paul and her colleagues in the National American Woman Suffrage Association, the parade drew large crowds, and some of them turned hostile. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures made by working press photographers, so it shows the event as the newspapers of the day saw it.
