Dated March 3, 1913, and captioned for Washington, D.C., this print records a suffrage parade held the day before Woodrow Wilson's presidential inauguration. Alice Paul and the congressional committee of the National American Woman Suffrage Association organized the procession to press for a federal voting amendment in the capital, and it drew large, often hostile crowds along Pennsylvania Avenue. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs that documents much of the public life of the period, and it offers a glimpse of a turning point in the national fight for women's suffrage.
